Volterra

The wonderful town of Volterra is said to be one of the oldest towns in Italy. Of ancient Etruscan origin the town is home to a famous Etruscan museum filled with artefacts from this era and many archeological findings. The town itself is circled by imposing stone walls and towers and surrounded by totally unspoilt scenery with rolling hills and valleys where there are superbly located self catering holiday homes and villas for rent in the beautiful area of Italy. Volterra boasts an ancient amphitheatre and is very well known for its alabaster production, in fact the town has many shops selling alabaster wares from ornaments , lamps and chess sets to huge pillars and statues. Some of the local workshops are open to the public and you can go and see skilled craftsmen at work. In the summer months lots of concerts and local festivals are held in the town, the most famous being the ‘medieval festival’ where the whole town goes back to the middle ages and there are parades, music and gastronomic stands galore.
