The gorgeous town of Siena with its famous black and white cathedral, shell shaped Piazza del Campo, and famed for its renowned Palio horse race is the capital of the ‘province’ of Siena which extends over a large area and has much to offer. The northern part of the Siena province has totally different scenery to that of the south part. The Chianti hills are wooded, and filled with vineyards and pretty stone villages whereas the ‘Creti senese’ has a distinct landscape of rolling hills and valleys and the clay earth is perfect for the production of wheat. Age old farmhouses are perched high on hills and approached by romantic cypress lined roads, many have been restored and now form apartments or villas for rent in the Siena area. There are beautiful towns to visit and the area is very well known for the wonderful wines such as Brunello di Montalcino and Nobile di Montepulciano. Much of the area is dedicated to pasture for sheep in fact the famous ‘pecorino’ sheep’s cheese is produced in and around Pienza.
