Terni

The Terni area in the south west of the region, is an exceptionally beautiful part of Umbria many delights to explore. Close by is the very pretty town of Narni which has a lovely history centre and with its original Latin name Narnia is said to be from where C.S Lewis took the name for his ‘fantasy world’ for his series of books The Cronicles of Narnia. The natural beauty spot of the ‘Cascate delle Marmore’ is well worth a visit with its spectacular waterfalls and is lovely and cool in the hot summer months. The wonderful town of Orvieto built dramatically on a rock and with a spectacular Gothic cathedral and ancient funicular railway leading up to the town is a must to see. Terni is close to rail and road links to Rome so this capital city can be visited easily in a day from this pretty region. Other beautiful towns not to be missed are Spoleto, immensely beautiful and well known for its ‘Festival of the Two Worlds’ an internationally famous event of music , opera and theatre held in the summer months. Norcia situated high in chestnut wood clad countryside is a striking town surrounded by its still intact and imposing town walls protecting the beautiful historic centre filled with pretty squares and Renaissance buildings. The town is famous for its pork products namely ‘ prosciutto di Norcia’ wonderful ham cured locally by traditional methods.The hams are so well known for their quality that shops selling cured meats are still known today in some areas as ‘Norcerie’ rather than the original name ‘salumerie’ .
