The town of Todi stands majestically on a hill over 400m above sea level overlooking the green and fertile Tiber valley. It is believed that the town was originally had Etruscan roots, but probably this now beautifully kept little town was founded or last least enlarged by the Romans. Much Roman architecture is apparent in the town with cisterns, fountains and wells still visible in the historic part of the town. Thanks to its dominant position Todi was a fortified town and still surrounded by imposing walls, ramparts and gates to the city leading into wonderful medieval streets, lovely piazzas and many churches, the most renowned being Santa Maria della Consolazione and San Fortunato. The hills and valleys surrounding Todi, in the centre of Umbria, are home to many vacation rentals with swimming pools in typical farmhouses, perfect bases from which to explore.
