Poppi

Quality villas and apartments with pool around the pretty town of Poppi

The lovely town of Poppi is situated between Florence and Arezzo in the gorgeous area known as the Casentino famous for its winding roads leading through beautiful thickly wooded hills with stunning views around every corner. Poppi is probably most famous for its XII century castle which dominates the town. Built by the Conti Guidi family, the castle, part of the battle ground of the Guelfs and Ghibellines, has remained pretty much unchanged. It is open to the public and from the bell tower there is a wonderful panorama of the surrounding countryside. The ancient dungeons can also be visited and the chapel has frescoes by Taddeo Gaddi depicting the Virgin Mary and St. John. From Poppi the cities of Florence and Arezzo are easily reached yet the real joy of the Casentino region is discovering the treasures hidden in the hills, such as the hermitage at Verna where St. Francis of Assisi went for his spiritual retreats and the monasteries of Bibbiena and Vallombrosa. Needless to say the area has a wonderful and hearty cuisine with local cured meats being a speciality, as well as truffles and mushrooms which grow abundantly in the woods.
